Corporación Miles presented a study that analyzes the judicial treatment of alleged abortion cases between 2012 and 2022.
The organization, dedicated to defending reproductive rights, analyzed 459 judicial cases in Chile, involving 444 individuals investigated for alleged consensual abortions, mostly women or pregnant people (321 individuals, equivalent to 72.3%).
Of this total, 10% of the cases (44 individuals) corresponded to accredited spontaneous abortions that did not warrant judicial proceedings, while 38.7% (172 individuals) were definitively dismissed.
Among other rights violations, breaches of professional secrecy and violations of the right to privacy were detected. These practices include reports by health professionals, detentions in medical centers, and instances of coercion towards patients.
